Eden Brooks was born during the 1880s. Growing up she was sweet, gentle, and loving. She was very inquisitive, always with her head buried in a book. She had a happy childhood, her family being very well off. Her father loved to buy her pretty dresses and tell her she was beautiful. Her mother taught her how to be a proper young woman, ready to join society as the wife of a noble. She had a younger brother, Christopher, and it was her duty to look after him. They were very close, she would read him stories from her books and together they would imagine countless other worlds to escape to. She would smile as he asked her to read just one more story before he went to sleep.
Once Eden reached adult-hood she was set to be married to the child of another wealthy family. James Blackthorne was a handsome man at the age of 19. Charming, witty, and ambitious, he seemed the perfect man for her. With him she would always be well off, always be secure. James liked his women, and Eden had caught his eye long before they were set to be married. She thought he was her knight in shining armor, come to carry her into a bright and happy sunset. They were married within 4 months of knowing each other, both families pushing for an early wedding. Eden Brooks was now Eden Blackthorne and she had all she ever dreamed of. She lived in a huge mansion across the country, servants waiting on her hand and foot. She ate food off silver platters made by the finest chefs and went to all the social gatherings young women were meant to go to. She looked forward to a big family in the future with her James, and if she missed her family it was only during small moments when her mind wandered.
However, it was not to be. Soon after their marriage James grew distant, always giving excuses for why he couldn't see Eden. He would say he had tons of work to do, or he had something to see to. He would arrive home later and later. Eden received letters from Christopher, asking how she was and wishing her happiness. She lied, telling him she was as blissful as could be with her new husband. It soon came to be that Eden began to miss her family terribly. Longing for the land of her youth. She missed her brother more and more everyday. She cried as she wrote the letters back to him assuring him everything was fine, but he sensed a change in her. He arranged to visit in a week's time and finally Eden had something to look forward to, hoping that finally she would have someone to confide in about her husband's strange behavior.
4 days before Christopher arrived, Eden discovered why her husband behaved so distantly. He had been having an affair with another woman, and he wanted her over Eden. Eden was so upset that she took a coach into the city and got out, needing to get away from the mansion and from James. She wandered aimlessly through the streets, blinding tears falling down her face. Before long it grew dark, and when she finally overcame her grief, she no longer knew where she was. Panicking she ran from street to street trying to find her way back, but to no avail. Suddenly the night grew icy cold and Eden felt her hair stand on end, a chill running down her spine.
A man stepped out from the shadows, dark and ghostly he almost floated across the ground toward her. "Who are you?" she managed to choke out fear constricting her entire body. He sniffed the air and grinned, flashing bright sharp teeth. "Now don't you just smell delicious," he purred, licking his lips. "You see I'm so very hungry." She gasped. He moved closer and she backed up clumsily until her feet touched the opposite wall. He looked down at her and she finally saw his eyes, black as the night, glittering with amusement. "Still," he said, reaching out to pluck up a lock of her hair, "such a waste of beauty. How would you like it if I took you away from this world, little girl, away from these stinking humans, away from all pain."
Eden tried to scream as she continued to stare into his soulless eyes but the scream died in her throat. Something clicked in her brain. She couldn't move, couldn't think. "What do you think, angel," He whispered, leaning even closer, his eyes glued to hers, "shall I take you away from everything?" Slowly, she nodded. "This is going to hurt," he breathed into her ear. Eden tried to run, tried to break out of her trance, but was frozen. Even so a gasp escaped her lips as she felt teeth sink into her neck. The man's arms locked around her, holding her in an unbreakable grip as he drank her blood. She began to feel weak, her thoughts were clouded. The world faded away, replaced by utter blackness.
Eden was floating. She couldn't see or move, she just was. It was peaceful and silent there. She was alone in the blackness and struggled to remember how she got there. She couldn't recall anything and concluded that she had always been there, floating as a shadow. It could've been years or seconds later that something changed. A small pinprick of light appeared in the distance. The size of a postage stamp it seemed to shimmer, glittering merrily at her. She smiled at the light, it was so beautiful. Then however, another light appeared. It was an exact copy of the other and they both glittered at her now, seeming to say, "Come."
Eden couldn't move, she tried to reach out her arm as though to touch the two little stars but her arms remained dead at her side. Another star appeared suddenly, the another. Hundreds popped into existence as she watched, growing brighter and brighter, filling her shadow world with blinding light. The light hurt her eyes and stung when it touched her skin. She was burning inside and out. As the pain and light grew unbearable she screamed out into the nothingness. The she awoke.
The man was gone and she was alone in an alleyway. Looking down she was covered in blood, the smell of it making her feel sick, it was far to sweet. She was thirsty, as though she hadn't drunken anything for days. Her throat burned with the need and without realizing it she was on her feet. She didn't care where the shadowed man had gone, she needed to stop the burning. She lurched out into the darkness and began to run. She almost didn't notice how the streets flashed by so intent was her thirst. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed a piece of paper tacked to a pole with her face on it. It was a missing persons sign. She didn't care, she had to quench the burning. She reached the river and was about to dip her head in to gulp some water when she smelled something. It was intoxicating, the purest nectar she could imagine. A light bobbed toward her in the distance and she bounded forward reaching the light in half a second.
He was facing away from her, a young boy with a lantern in his hand. She crept toward him the smell driving her crazy, she needed it. The boy suddenly turned, gasping, and the light fell upon her. "Eden," the boy whispered, "Oh Eden, I've found you!" It was Christoper. Eden crouched and licked her lips, having finally identified the smell. It was him. The sane part of her mind was screaming at her to stop, screaming at Christopher to run. The wild thirst was unbearable, she wanted him, she needed him. "Eden?" Christopher gasped, "Are you alright, are you hurt! Why are you covered in blood? I've looked everywhere for you!" He moved toward her and she screamed in her mind, RUN The hungry half of Eden flashed a twisted smile, "I'm so hungry and you smell so good Christopher." Then, she lunged for his throat.
